If you drive down the 55 freeway, pass an OCTA bus, or walk through the terminals at John Wayne Airport over the coming weeks, you will see a series of striking images.
Side by side, two portraits show the same young adult. On one side, someone navigating the heavy, isolating challenges of housing instability, mental health hurdles, and uncertain tomorrows. On the other, that same person standing grounded in confidence, purpose, steady employment, and hope.
What changed wasn’t who they were. What changed was access to the right support at the right time.
At Orangewood Foundation, we’re proud to officially launch a countywide brand awareness campaign across Orange County’s billboards, transit networks, digital channels, and John Wayne Airport. We are doing this to shed light on a reality unfolding right here in our community—and to make clear who we are, who we serve, and how we walk alongside young people on their path to independent adulthood.
The Reality Inside the Orange County Bubble
Orange County is widely celebrated for its coastal beauty and thriving communities. Yet hidden beneath that surface is a quiet crisis: hundreds of teens and young adults right here in our neighborhoods are aging out of foster care, facing housing insecurity, or struggling without family support.
At age 18, when most young people are leaning on parents for college advice, rent assistance, or simply a safe place to sleep, the young adults we serve are abruptly expected to navigate adulthood entirely alone. The challenges they face are often invisible to the broader public.
They don’t lack ambition or talent. They lack a safety net.
Setting the Record Straight: Who We Are Today
For decades, the name “Orangewood” has been a fixture in Orange County. Many still associate us solely with the Orangewood Children’s Home, an emergency shelter established in the 1980s.
It is time to close that chapter of misunderstanding: Orangewood Foundation is an independent non-profit organization, separate from the county-operated children’s home.
While our historical roots began in child advocacy, our mission today has evolved to meet the urgent needs of modern youth and young adults. We are not a shelter for young children. Orangewood Foundation is Orange County’s only organization providing complete, wraparound support tailored specifically to transitional-age youth (ages 15–26)—including foster youth, young people overcoming trauma, homelessness, or trafficking, and any vulnerable young adult striving for a stable future. Grounded in a compassionate, trauma-informed approach, we empower young people to achieve independence across four core areas:
- Housing: Bridge, transitional, and permanent supportive housing options that provide safe environments and lasting stability.
- Basic Needs: Immediate food, clothing, and essential drop-in resources.
- Life Skills & Employment: Practical guidance, financial literacy, and personal development, and career preparation.
- Education: Academic navigation and scholarships for trade programs, undergraduate degrees, and graduate studies.
When you invest in Orangewood, your support directly replaces the missing family safety net, giving young adults the baseline support they need to take their next steps forward.
