When a young adult transitions out of foster care or moves away from the instability of homelessness, they are often presented with a milestone moment: receiving the key to their very first apartment. It is a moment of triumph, symbolizing independence and a fresh start. However, as anyone who has ever moved into a new space knows, a key alone doesn’t make a home. An empty apartment, while a shelter, can feel daunting to a young person who lacks the resources to fill it.
Since 2020, the Assistance League of Orange (ALO) has been the compassionate driving force ensuring that our participants at the Orangewood Foundation have the dignity, comfort, and support they deserve. They understand that the transition to adulthood requires more than just four walls; it requires an environment where a young person can feel safe, settled, and valued.
More Than Just Essentials: A Partnership of Action
The ALO is an all-volunteer powerhouse, and their commitment to Orangewood’s mission is appreciated throughout our community. Their impact is not measured in donations, but in the time they spent giving back. Collectively, their members contribute over 2,000 hours every year to support our housing programs.
The process is personal. ALO members meet regularly with our housing team to identify specific, individual needs. They personally deliver furniture, turning a daunting pile of flat-packed boxes into a functional living space. By the time an ALO volunteer leaves an apartment, a young adult isn’t just looking at a room; they are looking at a future.
Expanding the Reach: Commitment to Housing
As we expand our housing options across Orange County to meet the growing need, the ALO has scaled its support to match the urgency of the moment. Recognizing the rising costs of living and the increasing complexity of housing our youth, the ALO recently had excess revenue from their thrift shop and fundraising efforts, and they chose to put 35K into the resources that our young people needed across all our programs. This increase in funding allows our housing team to move more easily and provide a higher standard of support for every young person we serve.
This expanded fund is already being put to critical use through Project CHOICE. We are currently working with Project CHOICE participants who are under the age of 18 and are being housed with families within the City of Orange. The ALO is stepping in to provide the essential housing items that make these placements successful, ensuring that the environment is not only safe but welcoming and fully equipped to support a minor’s needs ensuring that these participants have every resource available as they work toward stability.
A Legacy of Tangible Impact
The ALO’s impact can be felt in every corner of our housing programs. Their support is diverse, ranging from large-scale infrastructure to the small details that improve daily life.
- Furnished Living Spaces: Their work spans the spectrum of our housing needs, from furnishing entire individual apartment units for those entering independent living to providing dormitory furnishings for foster youth in our Youth Connected Program.
- Vital Appliances and Infrastructure: Some needs are purely functional but absolutely essential. ALO has provided refrigerators for our Orangetree location, ensuring that food security is never a question for our residents. They have even gone as far as providing gym equipment for survivors of sex trafficking in our Lighthouse program.
- Support for Furry Friends: In a beautiful display of their holistic approach to well-being, the ALO recognizes the importance of mental health and companionship. They provide pet supplies for emotional support animals that live with our participants.
The Magic of “Normalcy”
What makes the Assistance League of Orange truly special is their focus on the “extras” that many of us take for granted. They understand that a home needs more than just a bed and a fridge; it needs joy. In a world that has often been chaotic or clinical for foster and homeless youth, the ALO seeks to provide that normalcy.
To create a genuine sense of belonging and community, ALO members host game nights and dinners. ALO also took our YCP participants to Orange Coast College with Chef Davina and got to see behind the scenes of the chef in action and enjoyed an amazing meal together. These events are about more than food and entertainment; they are about human connection and the building of social capital. During the holidays, their “fairy godmother” spirit truly shines. They go above and beyond to decorate our housing spaces, providing Christmas trees and festive trimmings so our young adults can celebrate the season with pride in their own space—often for the first time in their lives.
This spirit of empowerment extends to milestone life events through their partnership with Cinderella’s Closet. For a young woman in foster care, the cost of a prom dress, shoes, and accessories can be an insurmountable barrier to participating in a rite of passage. ALO volunteers help these young women select their perfect outfits, making sure they feel celebrated, beautiful, and empowered during these formative moments.
Powered by the Community, For the Community
Perhaps most impressively, this incredible level of support is not reliant on corporate grants or government funding. It is funded entirely through their thrift shop in the Orange Circle and their own membership dues. Every time a member of the community shops at their thrift shops or fundraising events, they are directly contributing to the bed a former foster youth sleeps on or the refrigerator that keeps a survivor’s food fresh.
The ALO is an example of what happens when a community comes together with heart, time, and a clear, purpose. They prove that local solutions, driven by dedicated volunteers, can tackle some of the most complex social challenges in our county.
A Valued Partner
The partnership between the Orangewood Foundation and the Assistance League of Orange is a testament to the power of sustained, personal commitment. They do not just show up when it is convenient; they show up when the need arises, year after year. Their support is consistent, personal, and—above all—life-changing.
