The Empowering Impact of Emotional Support Animals

Hope’s Corner is one of Orangewood Foundation’s residential housing sites, designed to support young adults as they transition to independence — including LGBTQ+ young adults, male-identifying survivors of trafficking, and young adults with assistance animals who have a higher monthly income. Each resident has their own story, and Hope’s Corner provides a safe, welcoming environment where they can access supportive services, develop life skills, and connect with people and resources that help them thrive. A unique aspect of this housing program is that residents are able to bring their emotional support animals (ESAs) to live with them, allowing the comfort, companionship, and stability these animals provide to be part of everyday life.

For several of our young people, having a support animal nearby creates a sense of calm during stressful moments, provides a comforting presence throughout the day, and encourages daily routines that build responsibility, self-care, and a greater sense of independence.

One young resident shared how their support animal, Star, has made a meaningful difference in their life since recently joining our program. As they begin receiving supportive services tailored to their needs—including guidance on daily routines, life skills development, and opportunities to explore personal strengths—Star has been a steady source of comfort, reassurance, and joy, helping them navigate their transition into our program.

“Ever since my little Star came into my life, my days have been full of laughter and fun… Moments with my little Star are something I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.”

For young people at Hope’s Corner, ESAs provide connection, companionship, and comfort. Combined with tailored programs that blend independent living, life skills development, and a supportive community, these relationships help residents build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging as they embrace each day and grow toward independence.
