The leadership team of Orangewood Foundation was recently invited to speak with Authority Magazine for an interview tackling the rising concern of youth loneliness. In a thoughtful and respectful conversation, CEO Chris Simonsen and Chief Program Officer Dr. Tiffany Mitchell shared their insights on what’s driving this issue, and what real solutions can look like.
“Connected” But Alone
Young people today may have hundreds of virtual friends, but struggle to form meaningful, in-person relationships. Chris and Tiffany share why today’s youth are lacking emotional support, social connection, consistent adult guidance, and how that loneliness can quietly spiral into serious mental health challenges.
“Sometimes, we’re the only people they have,” says Chris.
“A like or comment might feel validating in the moment, but it doesn’t replace authentic connection,” adds Tiffany.
Innovative Solutions for Real Connection
The two also shared that Orangewood Foundation is building programs that go beyond temporary fixes:
Housing expansion to provide safe, stable living environments for youth
Intergenerational housing projects for young parents
Mentorship and trust-building efforts that support long-term healing
5 Ways You Can Help
Additionally, in this interview Tiffany and Chris share practical ways anyone can help ease youth loneliness:
Be present and emotionally available
Model vulnerability and emotional honesty
Limit screen time and encourage in-person interaction
Create inclusive environments
Reach out to the “quiet” ones who may be struggling silently
Even small gestures — a smile, a conversation, or consistent encouragement — can make a meaningful difference in a young person’s life.
